Review: Integrating non-mammalian model organisms into disease diagnosis

We discuss the value of non-mammalian model organisms such as fruit flies, nematode worms and zebrafish in rare disease diagnosis. We further argue that study of rare diseases provides valuable insights into common diseases, citing examples in which rare disease research in Drosophila led to novel insights into mechanisms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
